Wallpaper vs Wall Panelling vs Venetian Plaster: A UAE Wall Finish Comparison
Only one of these three options genuinely doesn't care about the humidity swings that come with turning your AC off while travelling for the summer.
The feature wall decision that comes up on almost every project
Somewhere in most residential briefs, there's a wall — behind a bed, in an entryway, framing a fireplace — that the client wants to feel different from the rest of the room. The three most common routes are wallpaper, dimensional wall panelling (increasingly fluted or ribbed profiles, which we've covered as a standalone 2026 trend), and Venetian or Moroccan-style polished plaster. Each has a genuinely different cost, durability, and humidity profile, and the right choice depends heavily on where in the home the wall sits.
Wallpaper: fastest and most design-flexible, least climate-forgiving
Wallpaper is the quickest and usually the cheapest of the three to install, and it offers by far the widest range of pattern, colour, and texture — nothing else on this list gives a client that many options to browse through. The catch, specific to this climate, is humidity. UAE indoor humidity swings when AC cycles off (during travel, power interruptions, or simply overnight setback settings) can cause paper-backed wallpaper to lift at the seams over time, particularly in rooms without consistent climate control or in bathrooms and any space near a kitchen with steam exposure. Vinyl-backed or non-woven wallpapers handle this considerably better than traditional paper-backed products and are worth the modest price premium in this climate specifically.
Wallpaper is also the most vulnerable of the three to physical damage — a dragged piece of furniture or an inquisitive pet can tear it in a way that's difficult to repair invisibly, usually requiring replacement of the full panel width.
Wall panelling: durable, increasingly the default for accent walls
Fluted, ribbed, and slatted timber-look panelling has become the dominant choice for feature walls in the last two years, largely because it solves wallpaper's durability problem entirely — it's physically robust, unaffected by humidity swings the way paper products are, and ages well without visible wear. Most panels on the market use an MDF composite core, often paired with a thermally fused laminate finish for durability, or supplied paintable for full colour customisation on site.
The trade-off is installation complexity and cost — panelling requires proper substrate preparation and precise cutting around outlets, switches, and skirting, and it's a genuinely different skill set from paperhanging or painting. It's also less easily changed later; repainting is straightforward, but removing panelling to change the wall's whole character again is a bigger job than stripping wallpaper.
Venetian plaster: the premium option, and the one requiring real skill
Polished plaster finishes — burnished to a soft sheen using traditional Venetian or Moroccan tadelakt techniques — deliver a depth and tactile quality neither wallpaper nor panelling can fully replicate. It's inherently breathable and moisture-tolerant when applied correctly, which actually makes it a strong choice for humid rooms including some bathroom applications, counter to the assumption that plaster and moisture don't mix.
The real risk with Venetian plaster is installer skill, full stop. It's an artisanal, hand-applied finish, and the difference between a skilled plasterer and an inexperienced one shows immediately and is very difficult to correct after the fact without stripping back to the substrate. Ask any supplier quoting Venetian plaster for photos of their own completed work, not brand marketing images, and ideally a reference site you can visit in person before committing on a large wall.
Our recommendation by application
Bedrooms and low-humidity living spaces where the client wants pattern variety and might change the look again in a few years: wallpaper, specified in vinyl or non-woven backing rather than traditional paper.
Entryways, media walls, and any high-traffic accent wall that needs to look good for a decade without touch-ups: panelling, in a paintable finish if the client wants flexibility to change colour later without replacing the panels themselves.
Formal living areas, powder rooms, and any space where budget supports genuinely premium finishing and the client has seen and approved the specific plasterer's previous work: Venetian plaster, understanding it as the highest-skill, highest-risk-if-done-badly option of the three.
Cost ranges to set expectations against
Rough guidance, so a quote can be sanity-checked rather than accepted blind: quality non-woven wallpaper installed typically runs at the lower end of the three options per square metre, including hanging labour. Fluted or slatted panelling sits meaningfully above wallpaper once you include the MDF panel material, substrate prep, and precise cutting labour — expect it to land closer to mid-range joinery pricing than to a simple paint job. Venetian plaster, because it's a multi-coat hand-applied process requiring a skilled plasterer working slowly rather than a machine-assisted install, is typically the most expensive per square metre of the three, sometimes substantially so depending on the specific technique and number of coats specified.
None of these numbers are worth quoting precisely here because pricing varies significantly by supplier, finish complexity, and how much wall prep the existing surface needs — but knowing the relative order (wallpaper cheapest, panelling in the middle, plaster typically most expensive) is useful when a quote comes back that doesn't match that pattern, because it usually means either the wall condition needs more prep work than expected, or the quoted product tier isn't what was actually discussed.
